چکیده

We introduce and investigate a class of complex semi-infinite banded Toeplitz matrices satisfying the condition that the spectra of their principal submatrices accumulate onto a real interval when the size of the submatrix grows to ∞. We prove that a banded Toeplitz matrix belongs to this class if and only if its symbol has real values on a Jordan curve located in C\{0}. Surprisingly, it turns out that, if such a Jordan curve is present, the spectra of all the principal submatrices have to be real. The latter claim is also proved for matrices given by a more general symbol. The special role of the Jordan curve is further demonstrated by a new formula for the limiting density of the asymptotic eigenvalue distribution for banded Toeplitz matrices from the studied class. Certain connections between the problem under investigation, Jacobi operators, and the Hamburger moment problem are also discussed. The main results are illustrated by several concrete examples; some of them allow an explicit analytic treatment, while some are only treated numerically.

On the Berlekamp/Massey algorithm and counting singular Hankel matrices over a finite field

We derive an explicit count for the number of singular n × n Hankel (Toeplitz) matrices whose entries range over a finite field with q elements by observing the execution of the Berlekamp/ Massey algorithm on its elements. Our method yields explicit counts also when some entries above or on the anti-diagonal (diagonal) are fixed. For example, the number of singular n × n Toeplitz matrices with ...

Submodular spectral functions of principal submatrices of a hermitian matrix, extensions and applications

We extend the multiplicative submodularity of the principal determinants of a nonnegative definite hermitian matrix to other spectral functions. We show that if f is the primitive of a function that is operator monotone on an interval containing the spectrum of a hermitian matrix A, then the function I 7→ trf(A[I]) is supermodular, meaning that trf(A[I])+trf(A[J ]) 6 trf(A[I∪ J ]) + trf(A[I ∩ J...

A Look-ahead Bareiss Algorithm for General Toeplitz Matrices

The Bareiss algorithm is one of the classical fast solvers for systems of linear equations with Toeplitz coeecient matrices. The method takes advantage of the special structure, and it computes the solution of a Toeplitz system of order N with only O(N 2) arithmetic operations, instead of O(N 3) operations. However, the original Bareiss algorithm requires that all leading principal sub-matrices...

Eigenstructure of Order-One-Quasiseparable Matrices. Three-term and Two-term Recurrence Relations

This paper presents explicit formulas and algorithms to compute the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of order-one-quasiseparable matrices. Various recursive relations for characteristic polynomials of their principal submatrices are derived. The cost of evaluating the characteristic polynomial of an N × N matrix and its derivative is only O(N). This leads immediately to several versions of a fast q...

Spectral properties of unbounded JJ-self-adjoint block operator matrices

We study the spectrum of unbounded J-self-adjoint block operator matrices. In particular, we prove enclosures for the spectrum, provide a sufficient condition for the spectrum being real and derive variational principles for certain real eigenvalues even in the presence of non-real spectrum. The latter lead to lower and upper bounds and asymptotic estimates for eigenvalues. AMS Subject classifi...
